Natick Hockey History
Natick has long been a home to elite hockey players.
Many Natick residents have gone on to college careers, and a few have even made it to the professional and Olympic ranks!
The Firehawks celebrate the success of all Natick residents in the sport of hockey. As a civic-based non-profit, we strive to highlight how deep the talent and love for hockey runs in Natick.

As Carlin explains: "I’ll never forget it. I was 11, playing for the Natick Comets. We were playing in a tournament. The opponent was from Canada. They had green, yellow and white uniforms. Same as ours.”
Luckily, the Natick High uniforms were hanging in Chase Arena’s locker room. They were comically too big for the squirt team, but the players had no choice but to put them on...even though the shirts wiggled down to their ankles.
Natick won, and Carlin got to hoist the trophy around the arena. “It was the first time I played with the name of my hometown on the front of the jersey. It was a moment in time.” The moment lives on.

Austin Harding Jr. - Harvard University (NCAA)
DOB: 1917
Position: F
Born: Natick, MA
High School: Noble & Greenough School
College:
Austie Harding followed quickly at Harvard on the heels of his fellow Noble and Greenough graduate, Fed Moseley, and soon established his own niche as an all time Crimson ice great. Harding also played four varsity years at prep school and then captained the Harvard freshmen.
Then began three outstanding varsity years during which he led the squad in scoring each year with 30, 25, and 30 point efforts, respectively.; The Boston born skater's abilities were recognized early in his college career when hockey writer Irving Burwell wrote in March, 1937: "Harvard's forward line against Yale will have Harding, without question the best American college hockey player of today at center."
Harvard captured the Ivy League title during Harding's first varsity year, 1937, and was a strong contender in the next two years. During his senior year he was team captain, named an All-American, and was awarded the John Tudor Memorial Cup as most valuable player. One of the most memorable feats of Harding's career was his last game when he played 58 of the game's 60 minutes and scored four goals and three assists in a 7-4 victory.
Certainly a true reflection of a contemporary's description of him: "A tireless easy skater and a fine stick handler." The Cambridge player attracted pro scouts, but World War II broke upon the scene precluding any venture in this direction. Returning from war time service Harding concluded his hockey playing with the Boston Athletic Association.
He was later honored by being named to renowned hockey historian S. Kip Farrington's 1921-45 Harvard era team at center.
He also played three years of Varsity Football at Harvard.
***In 1971 Austie was inducted into the Harvard Varsity Club Hall of Fame.***
***In 1974, Ausite was inducted into the United States Hockey Hall of Fame.***
Thomas "Toots" Barnicle - Princeton (NCAA)
DOB: 1916
Position: F
Born: Natick, MA
High School: Framingham / Phillips Exeter Academy
College:
Was an outstanding athlete at Princeton before the war. He played centerfield for the Princeton baseball team, quarterbacked their freshman football team in 1939 and played on the varsity hockey team from 1936 to 1939.
Post College:
Barnicle worked for the Phillips Petroleum Company before entering military service in August 1940 and serving as a Field Artillery officer in the Pacific Theater from March to December 1942. He then transferred to the Army Air Force and trained to be a bomber pilot. In February 1944, First Lieutenant Barnicle arrived at Ridgewell in England as a Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress pilot with the 535th Bomb Squadron, 381st Bomb Group.
Barnicle flew his first mission on May 6, 1944 against German long-range guns near La Glacerie, France. Later that month he was awarded the Air Medal.
On August 8, 1944, recently promoted Captain Barnicle was piloting his B-17 nicknamed “Button Nose” against German infantry lines near Caen, France. Flak hit his ship hard on the way to the bomb run and started a fire in the bomb bay after doors were open. Barnicle pulled out of the formation and headed back. When the fire in the bomb bay and another fire in the right wing got out of control he ordered the boys to bail out. Barnicle did not leave the plane until all his crew had bailed out safely.
The plane crashed into a schoolhouse near the Canadian side of the line close to Caen. Exploding bombs fortunately caused no casualties. Barnicle and his crew came down safely and were gathered up by the British. The crew spent the night at a C-47 base. “Soldiers were shooting craps,” explains his wife, Gertrude. “So he pawned his flight jacket for money and proceeded to win all theirs!"
He was soon back with his squadron in England and was later awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross.
